CAT Tools

What are CAT tools? What's the difference between CAT tools and AI?

Today, everyone has access to free, AI-enabled translation tools, and these are great for gathering basic knowledge or getting a first look at a topic. But do you want AI translating your website on its own? Probably not! Give AI the human touch with MTPE (machine translation post-editing). Utilizing an AI-generated translation as a first step speeds up my work as a translator, allowing me to focus on fine-tuning a text to my client's voice and specific expectations - while eliminating AI's errors.

CAT stands for "computer aided translation." CAT tools are tools that allow a translator to create custom dictionaries with client-specific terminology, save translations in a client-specific translation memory for editing or reuse later on, and auto-propagate existing translations to new documents. This ensures consistency and accuracy across multiple translations for the same client. Your slogans, product designations, product claims, and terms are applied every time, for the length of our working relationship.

I combine the power of AI with the power of specialized translation software for the most precise, most affordable results.

CAT tools I use:

I primarily work with SDL Trados, which is considered the industry standard software. However, I also have experience working with MemoQ, XML, and several other client-specific translation interfaces.

Services - My Process

As a native English speaker born in the US, I only offer German to English translations. Professional translators always translate into their own native languages, ensuring you get a truly fluent translation.

My process:

  • Term extraction and SEO optimization: You can provide me with key terms, or I can identify and translate key terms, product names, slogans, brand claims, and designations for you. This is an important first step that ensures your company’s English-language documents are accurate and comprehensible to an international audience, and that they can be found via search engines and interested buyers. Uniform term lists also help you create and maintain your corporate voice.

  • Text extraction: Either you provide me with the text to be translated, or I am happy to extract text from your webpages or documents and prepare it for translation.

  • Machine translation post-editing: AI translation tools are a great place to start, but machine-generated translations always need a human eye to ensure perfect accuracy. I modify an existing machine translation, or generate a translation for you and then edit it to ensure human-level accuracy and deliver an engaging, exciting final product more quickly and affordably than a traditional translation agency.

It’s like having your own in-house English-language writing/editing team, at a much lower final cost to you.
